Altra Olympus 2.0 Vibram first impressions

After testing out the Superior and the Lone Peak, for long runs and sprints, ultra races and long distance through hikes, I wanted to give a try to the One 2.5 as a marathon and racing shoe in general.  However my colleague ordered the wrong model and the Olympus 2.0 arrived to the shop.

I kept the shoe on my feet for a while, did a few sprints and jogged in it. I did not like it at all ! I feel that to shoe changes too much the real biomechanics. Not necessarily due to over cushioning, but the to the big drop on the front of the shoe. Your toes are in the air ! Way too much ! I did not keep it but sold it to a customer looking for large and cushioned shoe for recovery purposes.

Details I felt about the shoe:

  • Too heavy for my current liking. Not heavy at all for an over-cushioned, material rich shoe.
  • Runs smaller than the Lone Peak, Order half size up ! Runs bigger than the Superior 2.0, order half size down. I am UK12 in the Lone peak. UK13 in the Superior. The UK12 is small and the UK13 is big in the Olympus. This means that while I do not touch the toe box at all, I feel that for longer distances, as the shoe is designed for, I would really need that proper 1.5cm gap !
  • Toe curve is way too much ! When leaning forward and start running it just sends you over the toes.
  • I have a big feet and a big heel too. I still feel like a bit large at the back.
  • Overpriced. I mean to concurrence the HOKA shoes and to pay for a shoe what doesn't lack material, it has it's place in the market, even for the price tag of 150€. To my taste however, paying that much for something what lasts for 3months is too much. I am running a lot ! Sometimes 3 times a day.
  • Vibram outsole. Great and resistant. Probably !
  • No natural feel to the shoe, nothing like the Lone Peak or the Superior. It feels cumbersome and brick like. Still better than most of the HOKA shoes, the A-Bound midsole is great and responsive, and the big toe box works like always.

This is a personal issue. The shoe is great and good looking. A friend is doing the Transpirenea foot race int it ! 800km+ with 50000m+ elevation gain ! Guess what, it will hurt !So the shoe has already been tested and tried, that is why he choose it !

I did not feel like trying it on uneven terrain. I just need speed and dynamism. No jogging ! As natural goes, the shoe is not ! It is not designed for that, nor it is for every day wear, what you could do with the Lone Peak and the Superior ! Not for me at this moment. This is not a negative review, but a personal first encounter with a shoe ! Thanks a post your questions down below for further info !
