Saucony Peregrin 6 review

The Peregrin is again a model what I have been using since the 2nd edition. Dynamic, rapid, technical, protecting, flat, cushioned, flexible and it fits my feet, what is the most important. Lot of runners say it is narrow. Check the size guide and choose a correct size, having the 1.2 to 1.5cm gap definitely. I got a wide feet ! 11cm+ ! All the Peregrins fit me great, doing ultras and fast and technical mountain races in it. The EU sizes are different in Saucony shoes ! A UK12/US13 comes up in a size 48 not 47 . If you were wearing HOKA or Salomon before and you wanted your exact shoe size from Saucony, check the cm size chart, cause in that case a half size smaller might be true. I am UK12.5 in Salomon and HOKA for my needed 31cm toe space, while the UK12 in Saucony is largely sufficient. American Brand, so TNF or BROOKS has similar last in size UK12/US13 and no need to change size.

The Saucony Peregrin 6

What a great shoe:
  • 4mm drop on a 24 to 20mm heel to toe offset platform. This allows me to stay up on my forefoot without any effort. Dynamic, adaptive, Everrun midsole for functional cushioning.
  • Luckily there is no ISOFit , but a good thermo welded well structured upper. Holds the feet well in a very narrow but plush heel cup. There is just enough toe bumper.
  • Powertrac outsole for epic grip like in all Peregrin models.
  • Gaiter hook in case you wanted to attach some antidebris gaiters.

The shoe has some issues though, unfortunately. This discourages the ones with technical eyes from buying, for a good reason. Well before we received the shoes, I already started seeing models having problems with the outsole and complaints about chaffing from some trail runners.

!!! The Inner and that heel cup !!!

Can you see that double coloured ankle collar? Where the orange part meets the fluo heel cup ? Well the separation of those is a seam. When you try on the shoe, or tapping around it with your fingers, you might not feel it really. However, when you got wet or worn feet during an ultra or even during shorter a 30km race, these small seams can rub you raw !
I mean, probably not gonna be an issue for all the runners, but for some and that is enough. I mean at this day and age, we can surely make shoes with seamless heelcups ! Even the Xodus Iso, has one !

We see these kind of heel stitching in very low grade cheap shoes. Get it out from there guys ! Even as a forefoot runner, who do not have any issues ever with heel blistering, choosing some thinner sock might be a bad decision.

!!! Outsole !!!

I am not sure who designed the shoe and who accepted the features, but also cannot understand, that why did not they test vigorously the model, before it went into production. You just give it to a technical mountain runner and all the faults will be revealed in 2 weeks time. No big deal !
Why do I care ? Because the shoe is so freckin' great for my style of running and for my feet, that I am actually sad to see it deteriorate.

So the outsole has wide open exposed areas to the rockplate. We know, that cut out pieces from the grip, regardless that the rockplate or the EVA is exposed, will cause premature wear ! I already have seen the occurring problems on client's shoes and next time I am gonna try to take some photo shots.

Exposed outsole damage :
Some examples to show you how it can go wrong !

Brooks Cascadia 8 - the small exposed 2 to 3mm holes after some lugs could get caught and massive chunks came off from the shoe.

Tecnica Diablo Sprint / No Vibram: 1 single run with it and the outsole was destroyed, due to the rockplate being too close to the rubber. 1 single 53km run !

Hoka Speedgoat: over 80kg ; the torque applied to the midsole paired up with a rock puncture can blow out giant chunks from the midsole
